1½ lbs ground beef
-
½ cup breadcrumbs
-
1 large egg
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp dried parsley
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
For the Gravy & Bake:
-
1 tbsp butter
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
1½ cups beef broth (low sodium)
-
½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
-
1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for tang)
-
½ tsp paprika
-
Salt and pepper to taste
For Topping (Optional):
-
½ cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
-
Fresh chopped parsley
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease a baking dish if not using an oven-safe skillet.
Step 2: Make the Hamburger Steaks
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire, parsley, salt, and pepper.
Mix until just combined—don’t overwork the meat.
Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
Step 3: Brown the Steaks
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked through).
Transfer to a plate and set aside.
Step 4: Make the Gravy
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add butter.
Sauté sliced onions until golden and softened, about 5–6 minutes.
Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute to form a roux.
Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.
Add sour cream, Dijon mustard (if using), paprika, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Simmer for 2–3 minutes until thickened.
Step 5: Assemble the Bake
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy and onions over each.
If using a separate baking dish, transfer gravy and onions into the bottom, place steaks on top, and cover with more sauce.
Sprinkle with shredded cheese if using.
Step 6: Bake to Perfection
Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and gravy is bubbling.
Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
Use Lean Ground Beef – Keeps the bake hearty but not greasy.
Don’t Skip the Sear – Adds flavor and helps the patties hold their shape.
Low & Slow Gravy – Take time to brown the onions for deep flavor.
Customize the Cream – Use sour cream, Greek yogurt, or cream cheese for richness.
Bake in One Pan – If using an oven-safe skillet, save on cleanup!
