Ingredients
- 12 oz mozzarella cheese (block-style, not pre-shredded): Cut into bite-sized cubes.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour: For coating.
- 2 large eggs: To help the breadcrumbs stick.
- 1 ½ cups breadcrumbs (preferably panko): For a crispy exterior.
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese: Adds flavor to the breading.
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder: For a savory kick.
- ½ teaspoon onion powder: To enhance the flavor.
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano: Gives the coating a slight Italian flavor.
- Salt & pepper: To taste.
- Vegetable oil: For frying.
For Dipping:
- 1 cup marinara sauce: For dipping, optional but highly recommended.
Tools You’ll Need
- Skillet or deep fryer: For frying the cheese bites.
- Shallow bowls: To dip the cheese in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs.
- Tongs or slotted spoon: To remove the cheese bites from the hot oil.
- Paper towels: For draining excess oil after frying.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cheese
Cut the mozzarella cheese into bite-sized cubes (about 1-inch cubes). Set them aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Breading Station
In one shallow bowl, add the flour.
In another bowl, beat the eggs.
In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
Step 3: Coat the Cheese Bites
First, coat each mozzarella cube in flour, shaking off any excess.
Next, dip the flour-coated cheese in the beaten egg, allowing any excess egg to drip off.
Then, coat the cheese in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well. Repeat with the rest of the cheese cubes.
Step 4: Heat the Oil
Heat about 1 ½ to 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C). To test if the oil is ready, drop a small breadcrumb into the oil; if it sizzles and floats to the top, the oil is hot enough.
Step 5: Fry the Cheese Bites
Carefully drop a few cheese bites into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the cheese bites from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Step 6: Serve
Serve the crispy fried mozzarella cheese bites immediately while they’re still hot and gooey, with marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
✔ Freeze the Cheese – If you want extra crispy cheese bites that hold their shape, freeze the breaded cheese bites for 15-20 minutes before frying.
✔ Don’t Overcrowd the Pan – Fry the cheese bites in batches to ensure they cook evenly and get crispy.
✔ Drain Well – Place fried cheese bites on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them crispy.
