- 1–1½ pounds beef cube steaks (about 4 steaks)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ cup water
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil
- 1½ cups sliced mushrooms
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced (about 1½ cups)
- 1 teaspoon minced thyme
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon Creole seasoning
Instructions
- Season cube steaks with salt and pepper, then lightly coat both sides with flour.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and sear the steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, beef broth, and water until smooth.
- In the same skillet, add butter or oil and sauté mushrooms, onions, thyme, garlic, and Creole seasoning for about 6 minutes until tender.
- Pour the gravy mixture into the skillet with the vegetables. Bring to a boil before adding the seared steaks back in along with any drippings.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for about 8-10 minutes. Adjust thickness by adding more broth or water as needed.
