Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (500g) potato gnocchi – Fresh or store-bought.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil – For sautéing.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped – Adds a subtle sweetness.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced – Boosts the flavor.
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes – The base of the sauce.
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano – Classic Italian seasoning.
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil – Brings out the tomato flavor.
  • ½ teaspoon salt – Enhances all the flavors.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper – A little spice.
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) – For a bit of heat.
  • ½ cup heavy cream or whole milk – Makes the sauce creamy.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese – For that perfect melty topping.
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese – Adds a sharp, salty kick.
  • Fresh basil (for garnish) – A pop of color and freshness.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2: Cook the Aromatics

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté the onion for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3: Make the Tomato Sauce

  1. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  2. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream and mix well to create a rich, creamy sauce.

Step 4: Add the Gnocchi

  1. Add the gnocchi directly to the sauce (no need to pre-boil).
  2. Stir gently to coat and let simmer for 2-3 minutes until the gnocchi starts to soften.

Step 5: Add the Cheese & Bake

  1. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan evenly over the gnocchi.
  2. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  2. Garnish with fresh basil and serve warm.

Notes

No Need to Pre-Boil Gnocchi – It softens perfectly in the sauce while baking.
Use Full-Fat Cheese – For the best melting and flavor.
Add Protein – Stir in cooked ground beef, chicken, or sausage for a heartier meal.
Customize the Sauce – Add spinach, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes for variety.
