- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Tzatziki Sauce
- 1 cup Greek yogurt (full-fat)
- ½ cucumber, finely grated
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Serving
- 4 warm pita bread or flatbreads
- Sliced red onion
- Sliced tomatoes
- Fresh lettuce or arugula
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Lamb Marinade
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, olive oil, oregano, garlic powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Use your hands or a spoon to mix until well combined. Cover the mixture and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 2: Make the Tzatziki Sauce
- While the lamb marinates, prepare the tzatziki sauce.
- In a separate bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, olive oil, dill, lemon juice, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Stir until well mixed. Refrigerate the tzatziki sauce until ready to serve.
Step 3: Cook the Lamb
- Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Once hot, add the marinated lamb mixture and cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking it up into small pieces with a spatula as it cooks. Continue cooking until the lamb is browned and cooked through.
Step 4: Assemble the Gyros
- Warm the pita bread or flatbreads in a dry skillet or microwave.
- Once the lamb is cooked, spoon it onto each piece of warm pita.
- Top with sliced tomatoes, sliced red onions, and a generous drizzle of tzatziki sauce.
Step 5: Serve & Enjoy
- Roll up the pita and serve immediately. You can also add a side of extra tzatziki sauce for dipping or a side of fresh vegetables.
Notes
✔ Customize the Lamb – If you don’t have ground lamb, you can also use ground beef or chicken.
✔ Make it spicier – Add some chili flakes or hot sauce to the lamb for an extra kick.
✔ Don’t skip the marinating – Let the lamb marinate for at least 15 minutes to enhance the flavors, but if you have more time, let it marinate for up to 2 hours.
✔ Grilled Veggies – For added flavor, throw some grilled bell peppers or zucchini onto the pita before adding the lamb.
