Ingredients
- 8 oz soft mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 cups whole milk ricotta cheese
- 1 pound ground beef
- 5 garlic cloves
- 3 cups crushed tomatoes
- Olive oil
- Fresh parsley
Instructions
- In a large dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic; sauté until softened.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, salt, pepper, basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, egg yolk, mozzarella pieces, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, cayenne (if using), and parsley.
- Boil lasagna noodles according to package directions.
- In a baking dish, layer half of the meat sauce followed by noodles and half of the cheese filling. Repeat layers and top with remaining mozzarella.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes; then uncover and bake for another 30 minutes until golden.
